Choose the tent for your families needs.

Since you will quite literally be living in your tent choosing the right size and style is critically important.

How Big should I Buy? Whats the right style? how much should I spend?

These are all importatn questions that need to be answered before you start shopping let alone spend your hard earned money.

The first decision would naturally be how large do you need.

A good rule of thumb is to figure about 1.5 people for gear and elbow room when looking at the suggested number of people for a tent

The second decision is the style that fits your needs, personally my family uses an 18x12 cabin however what is right for us may not be for you.

You will find that ease of setup/take down, ceiling height and general style/latout can help make a model better suited to your families needs

The common Tent styles are:

  • Pup
  • Cabin
  • Dome

The Pup style

The pup is a style usually good for one to two persons, they typically are easy to set up and store.

The advantages here is size and ease of set up, the disadvantages are limited room for gear and low head room for taller persons.I would also like to note that cost on this style varies from around thirty dollars to well over five hundred dollars depending on quality and function.

The Cabin

The cabin is usually rectangular and offers fair to excellent head room, this is one of the more challenging styles to learn how to set up.

This style is a very common choice among campers because of its space for gear, head room and good mix of cost and versatility.

The Dome

The dome offers more head room and space for gear, depending on the person you might find this a little harder to set up at first.

Typically domes are made for three to seven persons, please keep gear in mind because of the round floor you will find you have less room for gear with this style.

Some Extras can Make a Big Difference

Their are several items you can purchase that will help extend the longevity of your equipment.

A good quality tarp the size of your floor is ideal to be placed under the tent to preserve the floor ,A fan to keeep it cool and some xtra tent stakes.

You may think twice about spending a couple hundred dollars on a tent , remember buying it right the first time can really pay you back over the long run.
