Poison sumac Prevention and Cures

I have suffered with the burning and itching caused by poison sumac, this skin irritation can quickly turn into your worst nightmare.

You need to know this

The rash caused by this plant is an allergic skin reaction to an oil found in the plant , called urushiol. This oil is found in all parts of the plant, including the leaves, stems, roots, and berries.

Did I touch Poison Sumac?

The first symptoms are often small red bumps or pimple like outbreaks, these will usually appear within twenty four to forty eight hours of initial contact.

I speak from experience when I warn you if you believe you have touched on of these plants do not scratch the pimple(s) as this will spread the oil. Also sweat also seems to help spread the oil.

Scratch,scratch,scracth make it stop!

When it comes to relieving the itch and burning forget calamoine lotion, ice or anti itch cream they just work.

Some much needed relief

I can recommend a way to rid yourself of this affliction, I found a product called Tecnu outdoor skin cleanser it dries up the oil from ivy,oak and sumac.

I would like to point out that you need to avoid touching clothing, tools and any object that comes in contact with the oil.
Poison Sumac left untreated requires professional first aid so please treat it as soon as you can do not let it spread to far, I have and it meant over five weeks of agony. This plant does change its look at different times of the year so your going to need to pay attention to avoid contact.

The M.O. For this plant

The plant can look like a bush or vine and depending on the season and have berries.

This plant prefers boggy area in the south eastern area of the United States, has seven to 13 smooth-edged leaflets and can change color from glossy green to a pale green.
