Hiking is a activity that is Family Fun
When we go camping ,hiking is the second activity our kids ask to do simply because of the freedom they feel they are getting being allowed to run around in the woods and explore nature (bike riding is always their favorite)
I would suggest you find a map of the area your walking around in just in case you find yourself lost, also pay close attention to the weather recently my family had to cut a trip short because of some nasty rain. When we camped in the White Mountains it seemed like rain was never far behind us, almost every hike we took had some rain! the last hike we took we ended up with us running back to our camp site because the sky opened up and we did not want to be soaked through.
Some historical attractions can only be reached by walking into them so getting your kids interested in this activity can open up some interesting opportunities to see some real unique places.
Some rules to knowI would like to point out there some unwritten rules to follow that you should be aware of, first leave nothing but foot prints this should be pretty clear to understand second be courteous of other people and allow faster moving traffic to pass you third never and I mean never hike alone fourth always carry some basic
first aid supplies
with you and fifth always let someone know where your going and when your expected to return if your planning on a long or dangerous trip following this rules will ensure you have a safe trip and safe return.
Pack only the essential Families should only need to bring a backpack with the first aid supplies and water bottles for everyone, this allows you to travel light which you will appreciate later in the trip! Children love to treat going into the wood as a adventure so foster their imagination and play games or teach them about the various trees, plants and animals may encounter. Safety FirstPlease make sure every one has a a loud whistle in case some one gets separated form the group. You need to plan just like with fire drills at home make sure every one has a Pre determined meeting area. The true point to be made here is to plan ahead, talk to your children and make sure the family knows exactly what to do if an emergency occurs. Older children will be better prepared with a small pin on compass, with one of these and some basic knowledge most kids will be able to find their way out of trouble.
When you go
hiking this is a good family activity
that will help you kids appreciate nature more and just have some good old fashion fun as a parent I can tell you that nothing makes my kids happier than running around trails for a couple of hours.
