Hiking is a activity that is Family Fun

When we go camping ,hiking is a sure fire hit activity our kids ask to do simply because of the freedom they feel they are getting being allowed to run around in the woods and explore nature.

I would suggest you find a map of the area your walking around in just in case you find yourself lost, also pay close attention to the weather recently my family had to cut a trip short because of some nasty rain.

Some historical attractions can only be reached by walking into them so getting your kids interested in this activity can open up some interesting opportunities to see some real unique places.

Some Hiking rules to know

I would like to point out there some unwritten rules to follow that you should be aware of,

  • leave nothing but foot prints this should be pretty clear to understand
  • be courteous of other people and allow faster moving traffic to pass you
  • never and I mean never hike alone
  • always carry some basic First Aid Supplies
  • always let someone know where your going and when your expected to return

Pack only the essential

Families should only need to bring a backpack with the first aid supplies and water bottles for everyone, this allows you to travel light which you will appreciate later in the trip!

Take your kids on an adventure........

Children love to treat going into the wood as a adventure so foster their imagination and play games or teach them about the various trees, plants and animals may encounter.

Safety First

Please make sure every one has a a loud whistle in case some one gets separated form the group. You need to plan just like with fire drills at home make sure every one has a Pre determined meeting area.

The true point to be made here is to plan ahead, talk to your children and make sure the family knows exactly what to do if an emergency occurs.

Older children will be better prepared with a small pin on compass, with one of these and some basic knowledge most kids will be able to find their way out of trouble.

When you go hiking this is a good family activity that will help you kids appreciate nature more and just have some good old fashion fun as a parent I can tell you that nothing makes my kids happier than running around trails for a couple of hours.

One other factor to consider when you are out and about in the woods is being Eco friendly protecting nature should be a second nature for any one who loves the out doors.

When you want to do some serious exploring without the risk of getting lost investing in a GPS is a great idea. Garmin makes some heavy duty hand held model ideal for this task.
