Campsite Selection
Campsite selection is really hit or miss unless you do your homework, my wife and I research well ahead of time to make sure we are making the right choice.
You will want to first determine if all your Camping Equipment will fit on the chosen site, since you have kids remember to leave some room for games and activities.
Tip When we camp my family uses heavy duty circle containers that collapse so they are easy to pack and still are fully functional during our week in the woods.
Another major consideration is how level the ground is because if it rains you do not want your tent in a area that is prone to flooding. A excellent feature my wife and I look for in a site is a small group of trees, these provide a perfect place to stretch a tarp out to provide shelter for your eating area. Check The Ground FirstPlease remember to check the ground for excessive amounts of rocks, tree roots and soft areas as this will make setting up very difficult.
During one of our many camping trips my family found out the hard way you must also look for old tent stakes still in the ground we fell victim to this and destroyed a good air mattress in the process therefore Campsite Selection is a serious task.
Campsite selection is easy
when you use a quality service like Reserve America this is one of the primary ways I book my reservations. You can find camp grounds ,view maps and get general information on the site(s) your interested in. Planning is time well spent so I would start at least four months ahead of time for your camping trip, this will also help you get the site you really want. Take A Look Around FirstIf you plan on staying at a local state park you can usually walk around and check out the sites off season(check local laws first)and then reserve them online. You would be surprised how different some sites are in the real world compared to a map on a website, given that I camp with a 18x12 tent this is very important to my family. I have found most campgrounds will be more than happy to let you know if your gear will fit a given site, I have had to call several times to make sure our tent will fit.
Bright idea!
The key practice that I can not stress enough is inspect your equipment before the trip to ensure everything is in working order and all the parts are present, imagine the horror of discovering you are missing a tent pole or support when you are already onsite and setting up!
Plan B Anyone? You may already have a destination in mind I would suggest however to explore some options just in case you are unable to book a site at your first choice this helps keep your vacation plans moving. Many people find themselves going to the same place year after year trust me this get boring and the kids will be happier with a change of pace. And The Winner Is?I would hold a family meeting and take suggestions on where the family should go this lets everyone have input and who know where you might end up!
Like Minnesota
why not Check out Minnesota campgrounds in our state and national parks and forests. View a short video of Ranger Paul sharing one of Minnesota's most beautiful camping spots. This is great site I discovered lately why not pay them a visit and see all this great state has to offer.
In closing I would like to suggest you visit our new
Camping Checklists section
after all this is the next logical thing to be thinking about. You may also have to make the decision of tenting it or using a Rv I recently added some sections on
Rv Camping
so you may want to take a look here as well because the best thing you can have on your side is knowledge. So let your 2008 trip begin plan, research and go enjoy the great outdoors!
