Winter camping
The cool breeze, snow on the trees holiday decorations every where and your snug in a warm sleeping bag, does this sound relaxing if so then Winter camping is for you. The major draw back for most people when you mention camping in the Fall or Winter is the temperature, this really is not a problem if you have the right camping equipment I would recommend getting primary gear for winter camping such as properly rated sleeping bags, thermal under wear, propane or electric heater and extra blankets. Oddly most people think you need to dress real heavy and stay indoors for some reason, when I have camped in the Winter months I stayed outside being active all day and spent plenty of time by a nice warming campfire. Let me tell you unless you have made a smore when its twenty degrees out you have not lived, the combination of being warmed by the fire and having a sweet tasting warm snack is a one of a kind treat. Warming by the Campfire The weather is your friend and enemy, having a weather radio handy is a great recommendation so you do not find your self in the middle of real nasty weather. This is a time of the year when you really should tell some one else where your camping just in case something happens to you. The picture on the left is something you should plan to spend some time around, a campfire unlike in the summer when a fire is just for cooking and some relaxing in the winter it helps provide some much appreciated heat and light.
Enjoy the seasonal flareWhat other time of the year can you take the whole family on a real sleigh ride through the snow at Christmas time? Why not build a Snow person and make him part of your campsite, kids get bored fast so their plently of Winter specific ideas for fun like: - Snow ball fights
- Building snow forts
- Snow angles
- ice skating
- Seasonal events
- taking cool pictures
You will notice that a lot of ideas included the element of snow, this doesn't mean snow is the only thing to use to have fun its just a unusual thing to have around when camping. Expect the unexpectedImagine taking a hike with your kids and seeing animals like deer foraging, fox or even Moose moving around the forest. I suggest trying to camp at a place you have stayed at already this way the changes of season will have more meaning. Imagine the lake you always swim in frozen solid allowing you to ice skate instead of swim.
Final thoughtI strongly recommend that you take the age of your children in to your plans when you plan on camping any latter than October, the night time temperatures could be to much for younger kids. The region of the country also will affect when you camp as well.Since you are interested in
