Around the campfire

Welcome back, this month we are going to cover a variety of subjects to help you even out your camping experience.

We all can conserve and make better use of our resources when we camp so I will give you some ideas on how to "leave nothing but footprints" the next time you camp.

Do your kids always think about safety? really kids just think about having fun and that's why WE need to think of it for them.

When you camp it's real easy to forget to have your kids wear helmets or look both ways before crossing a street, so you need to keep the eyes in the back of your head peeled to make sure trouble doesn't find them.

Safer camping ideas

Keeping your kids safe is very simple,Pay attention this really is most important with the smaller kids, teenagers usually are just fine .

Some ideas we have used that work really well are:

  • * Give each kid a two way radio(s)
  • A loud Whistle to call for help
  • Check points or check in times
  • Stay in groups only
  • bug spray frequently
  • Thick layer of sun block SPF of 15 or higher

I am sure you can think of some real useful ideas to and that's great since no two family camp alike.

Remember the whole trick to sun block is to apply it every couple of hours, avoid heavy activities between 11 am and 3 pm and always reapply after swimming.

Dehydration is a real threat to your kids when its hot and humid out, make sure they drink lots of water(not soda or juice), take breaks in the shade and avoid playing on blacktop or other materials that hold in the heat.

The last bit for this section is more of of a FYI, kids usually will not eat as much on real hots days, so forcing them to eat could actually make them sick.

Section II: Eco friendly camping

The whole reason to go camping is to enjoy nature so we need to make sure we preserve it! over the last five years or so camping has really seen a major influx of "newbies".

The issue is o a lot of these new campers are teenagers or adults with little or no respect for nature, you may be thinking how that affect me? simple when you find trash all over the place, trees hacked up for firewood and people using gear for a weekend and throwing it out.

When these kind of campers set in they can cause lots of damage, so we all need to be even more careful how we camp.

Now that I have said my peace lets look at way to leave less of an impact when you camp.

Reduce and reuse

The biggest change you can make is buying reusable plates, silverware and cups. Think about how many plastic cups and plates you just throw away in a single week of camping.

Leave nothing but footprints

When you camp only:

  • use fallen branches or wood logs
  • never take bark off a live tree
  • do not dump toxic cleaners into the ground
  • stay on marked trails
  • Do not feed the animals

There are many products now available that are made from recycled plastic or man made materials and these are a great way to reduce on impact on nature,

I would avoid the "cheap" gear found in discount stores since its really only going to last a short time and you will have to buy a replacement (buying it twice isn't cheaper).

Section III: Equipment thoughts and idea'ss

The biggest investment is certainly your tent so I would recommend spending the money and buying quality.

There are several things about the way tents are rated you should be aware of, the number of people they hold is usually without gear. You will want to count the room for two people gear as one person of capacity

There are many different grades of material for tent walls and floors so be careful and compare models when shopping, also you will want to waterproof the seams to ensure a dry camping trip.

The other pieces if gear you will want to invest money in are Sleeping bags, coolers and a stove or grill. These items ensure you have a place dry place i to sleep and hot food to eat.

You can get away with a $30 grill to cook on just make sure its kept clean, we recommend sticking with a propane model since the fuel is easy to find and decently priced.

Sleeping bags are rated for low temp, so pay attention because you could sweat to death in the wrong bag,
